The coronavirus pandemic, with subsequent closure of many local facilities for long periods of time, has highlighted the importance of maintaining our local amenities, no more so than our very active village Community Centre.

Due to recent retirements, there are some vacancies on the committee. If you would like to be involved in helping run the Community Centre, please come along to the meeting or contact Melrose East, Chair, for further information – melrosemeast@gmail.com

Llangors Community Garden is the product of a partnership between Llangors School, Llangors Church and the Village Hall Committee. The school and the church are both eco focused bodies and they are working together to create a wildlife garden on some unused land at the relocated community play park site near the village hall.

On Thursday March 10th a coffee morning was held in the Community Centre to raise funds to support refugees fleeing from Ukraine. It was very well attended by people from all around the Lake and beyond. Many people had donated cakes and raffle prizes. 

Anne Evans and Chris DeManuel were extremely busy serving teas and coffees all morning.

As well as the coffee morning, donations were received from Llangors Church, Pennorth Chapel, Castle Pub Llangors and Sheena’s Pilates class.

In total £2130 was raised. This is a phenomenal amount and will be matched funded by the National Westminster Bank, thereby doubling the amount raised for the DEC Ukraine Appeal.

New kitchen cabinets have been built in the kitchen in the Community Centre in Llangors. It is now looking very smart, clean and professional as you can see from the photo.We are extremely grateful to Powys County Council’s Covid Community Recovery Fund for giving the Centre a 50% grant towards the cost of purchasing the cabinets, new tables and crockery.

Rydym yn hynod ddiolchgar i Gronfa Adfer Cymunedol Covid Cyngor Sir Powys am roi grant o 50% i’r Ganolfan tuag at gost prynu’r cypyrddau, byrddau newydd a llestri. .

A new outdoor playgroup is starting in Llangors.  Aimed at 0-5 year olds, each session will be based on a nature story with a craft and small world play, as well as a mud kitchen and fire pit.

Charity Coffee Morning

A Christmas charity coffee morning was held on Thursday, December 9th raising money for Brecon Women’s Refuge. Festive refreshments were available as well as some stalls selling cakes, cards and  bric a brac. The local Parkinsons Group had their own stall selling crafts. Thanks to the ladies of the village who provided the cakes and to Ordrith Quarrell who ran the raffle. A total of £251.33 was raised. Julie Pugh kindly took the money to the local refuge. 

Christmas Lunch

On Monday, December 13th, a fantastic Christmas lunch was held in the Community Centre for residents of villages around the lake. A total of 38 people attended and it was great to see Pat and Dave Hope attend as well as Lena Hughes. We all enjoyed a glass of sherry on arrival followed by an amazing spread of sandwiches, sausage rolls and quiche and then, if there was room, sherry trifle or Christmas pudding and all swilled down with as much white wine as you wanted. A huge thanks to Linda Kells and her team of elves who prepared all the food and served it on the day. All people attending took a lateral flow test before the meal.

Carol singing

On Sunday December 19th, a rather foggy, cold but dry evening, a group of about 20 volunteers from the village, including a family from Cardiff who were staying in the area, walked around Llangors singing carols and festive songs. The group visited Brookside Nursing Home and sang outside to the residents who were warm and snug inside. They appreciated the singing and the staff thanked us for our efforts. At the end of the evening we received a warm welcome at the Castle Pub where Mike and Michelle treated us all to mulled wine and mince pies. 

A total of £250 was raised for Llangors Play Park. Well done to all who sang and thank you to all who contributed.

On Wednesday November 17th, a beautiful autumn day, the doors finally opened on the new community run shop and cafe in Llangors. The first customers to enter the shop, after  ‘cutting the ribbon’  were Doreen Tranter and Ryley Reed, two notable residents of Llangors. Volunteers, Anne Evans and Alison Eagle, were on hand to help as was the Manager, Becky Bates and the Assistant Manager, Sharon Harris. The shop and cafe are situated adjacent to the Community Centre.

Huge thanks must go to the shop committee who have provided the village with such an essential service and to all the people who volunteer in the shop. It is important that we now use and support this local venture. It is  a lifeline for many residents of Llangors and neighbouring villages.
