Llangors Youth and Community Centre is proud to support Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTSR). The charity provides important ‘Respite Days’ for people living in South Wales, mainly in Swansea but also in Newport and Cardiff, as well as Syrian families who have been housed in Powys under the Government’s Resettlement Scheme. People seeking sanctuary have fled from war, torture and/or persecution in their own country and many will face ongoing hardships in Wales with a risk of falling into poverty or homelessness.
Refugees and asylum seekers come from many countries of the world including Syria, Iran, Albania, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Eritrea, Sudan, Russia etc. HBTSR aims to relieve some of the stress, anxiety, poverty, isolation, desperation and sheer boredom by organising days out in our beautiful rural location and providing good, homemade cooking, welcoming smiles, friendships and a wide variety of activities which usually include a walk in the countryside and a game of football!! The visitors end the day by going home laden with bags of food, toiletries, clothes, sometimes cards and flowers, all donated by local people and supermarkets, but always with many happy memories of a wonderful day in the Brecon Beacons. Friendships have been renewed and new ones made.
The first of the Away Days in Llangors took place on 10th July 2016, followed by one on 2nd April 2017 and this year on 11th Feb 2018. We will be holding our next one in 2019 – look out for the date.
